Our charity work

We’re proud to continue our positive charity work and have chosen to support Prostate Cancer UK as our Group charity for 2024.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and about 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

As a family business, quality of life and the care of our employees both during and after their time with us is something we value highly. We’re working throughout 2024 to raise funds and awareness to fight this life-limiting condition.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate gland. Cancer is when abnormal cells start to divide and grow in an uncontrolled way. The cells can grow into surrounding tissues or organs, and may spread to other areas of the body.

The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system.

Who gets prostate cancer?

You need a prostate gland to get prostate cancer. So it mostly affects men. Trans women and non-binary people who are born male (assigned male at birth) can also get prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is most common in older men. On average each year 35 out of 100 (35%) new cases are in men aged 75 and over.

It is more common in Black men than in White men. It is less common in Asian men. A man’s risk of developing prostate cancer depends on many factors.

These include:

  • age

  • genetics and family history

  • lifestyle factors

  • other medical conditions

How common is prostate cancer?

Around 52,300 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK each year. In men, it is the most common cancer in the UK.

The number of people diagnosed with prostate cancer has increased over the last 10 years. This might be because more people are having PSA tests and the population is getting older.

“Chosen by our own workforce, I am proud to see Prostate Cancer UK as our Group charity for 2024 and I look forward to the various events and fundraisers that will take place across our multiple businesses this year. As British manufacturers, we put value and quality into everything we do, and demanding a high quality of life for our families and retiring colleagues is no different. Let’s work together to help combat this disease and help those forced to deal with it.”

The charity for our workforce

Prostate Cancer UK was chosen by our own employees after a Group-wide survey. Our employees are a passionate force for good and we are committed to raising as much money and awareness as possible.

Fundraising

We aim to raise funds through a variety of staff activities, supplier engagements and production agreements. The money raised will help fund charity activities including the best research, improvements in healthcare, quality support services and help drive change with policymakers. All this supports our employees, our communities and our customers.

Engagement

We empower our people to be a force for good by sharing their own personal experiences to help others and to have life-improving conversations. Our charity activity is a chance for us to educate and inform our teams about health and happiness, looking to maintain a positive workforce and social community.

Support

We'll use this activity to ensure our teams have access to the latest support and care. Raising awareness, as well as funds, will help us to tackle issues before they become unmanageable. We will apply this additional care to our existing and ongoing health screening and medical plans as part of the wider care package we offer to our valued staff.

Our previous work

The MJAllen Group has been raising money for good causes for many years, following the wishes and actions of our large and varied team of colleagues. This activity was formalised in late 2021, when the decision was taken to host a single charity each year - combining the efforts of each MJAllen business to raise greater funds and awareness for one collective purpose.

2023 - Alzheimer’s Society

Significant amounts of money was raised for Alzheimer’s Society through several events such as raffles, barbeques and sporting tournaments. Our staff awareness increased hugely and our workforce engaged with the initiative, speaking to healthcare professionals and removing the stigma of exploring any symptoms.
